Smart ID receives highest trust label from the Belgian government

The Belgian Federal Public Service BOSA has awarded Smart‑ID the highest trust label for electronic identification. The Level of Assurance (LoA) “High” shows that we meet the strictest technical and organizational criteria to allow citizens to log in securely and prevent digital identity fraud.

Smart‑ID is now approved as an authentication system enabling citizens to securely access online government services in Belgium. FPS BOSA has started the technical process to add Smart‑ID as an option in CSAM, its gateway to government e‑services. By adding Smart‑ID to the selection, the FPS not only increases freedom of choice, but also improves system resilience by maximizing the availability of public services for citizens.

“Achieving the highest trust level (LoA High) from the Belgian government is an important milestone for Smart‑ID,” says Peter Wouters, Business Development Manager for Smart‑ID in Belgium. “It confirms that our solution meets exceptionally strict governmental requirements in terms of security, reliability, and governance. Citizens and public administrations in our country can now use Smart‑ID for their daily digital interactions, such as secure login and digital signing. At the same time, it also assures private companies that Smart‑ID is suitable for applications where security, compliance, and operational continuity are essential.”

The “Level of Assurance: High” confirms that Smart‑ID securely verifies identities and prevents misuse. FPS BOSA acknowledges that Smart‑ID’s verification processes, authentication mechanisms and security measures offer a reliable solution for both public authorities and private organizations.

An identification solution with the highest trust level helps organizations in regulated or security‑sensitive sectors – such as banking, telecommunications, insurance, and digital services – to strengthen service continuity, comply with relevant regulations, and guarantee customers secure and user‑friendly digital access.

With the Belgian accreditation, Smart‑ID now holds the highest assurance level in four European countries. Smart‑ID is one of the few eID solutions to achieve this highest LoA level in multiple EU member states. The European eIDAS regulation defines the criteria that must be met and is technology‑neutral. The FAS implements these criteria using technologies tailored to the Belgian context, while fully adhering to eIDAS requirements.
