Smart-ID: your new digital access to government services is now ready to use

There is a new alternative for logging in digitally to government services. Starting today, users can securely register with the Smart-ID app using their Belgian eID to confirm their identity on portals like MyMinfin, MyPension, or other e-government applications. The app is now fully operational and available on the government’s familiar CSAM login screen.

Smart-ID is a digital identity app developed by the European digital identity company SK ID Solutions. Following a short and efficient deployment phase, the app is now a core component of the Federal Authentication Service (FAS), the central authentication gateway of the Belgian government that grants citizens access to dozens of secured e-government applications.

From accreditation to practical deployment

This milestone follows the official recognition of Smart-ID with the highest Level of Assurance (LoA High) by the Federal Public Service Policy and Support (BOSA) in January 2026 Since that accreditation, the system has been seamlessly and swiftly integrated across the FAS. The accelerated rollout, validated in collaboration with major public service platforms, confirms Smart-ID’s status as a robust and field-proven solution for millions of Belgian users.

Smart-ID is therefore now available as a key to unlock the familiar CSAM digital gateway to e-government services. To do so, the linked FAS authentication system verifies the identity of the user wishing to log in. This is done via multi-factor authentication using the eID and card reader, SMS, tokens, or apps such as the new fully-fledged alternative Smart-ID. Adding Smart-ID increases freedom of choice for citizens and strengthens the operational resilience of the system by maximising the availability of public digital services.

What changes for citizens and organisations?

Citizens with a Smart-ID account — created via the app using the Belgian eID — can now use their trusted identification tool for federal e-government applications as well. Creating a Smart-ID account simply requires downloading the app from the App Store (Apple) or Play Store (Google), followed by a one-time identity verification.

For regulated sectors such as banking, insurance, and telecommunications, the successful and rapid integration within the FAS serves as a powerful validation. It confirms that Smart-ID meets the most stringent Belgian and European requirements for secure identity verification.

The official go-live of Smart-ID in FAS is the logical and crucial next step following our earlier technical and security accreditation in January. Belgians can now effectively use our app for their day-to-day digital interactions with the government. This is a critical step towards an open authentication market in our country. Smart-ID offers an architecture that prioritizes user privacy and maximum security”, says Peter Wouters, Business Development Manager Smart-ID Belgium.

European context and eIDAS compliance

Smart-ID is a European pioneer in digital identification, having been the first private provider in Europe to achieve the highest Level of Assurance (LoA High) under the eIDAS framework in 2018. With its current activation within the Belgian Federal Authentication Service (FAS), Smart-ID now holds LoA High status in four European countries. While the eIDAS regulation sets technology-neutral criteria at the European level, the Federal Public Service BOSA ensures these standards are strictly implemented within the Belgian regulatory and technical context. The availability of Smart-ID within the FAS gateway marks the final step in this process, ensuring full compliance with both Belgian and European provisions.
